      <image:title>Physiotherapy - How animals move is complicated!</image:title>
<image:caption>If there is a problem with any part of the animal, for example pain in a foot, it impacts on the rest of the animal which then compensates to try and avoid the pain. This leads to asymmetries in movement which if left untreated can lead to pathologies or problems developing in other areas due to tension in soft tissue or overloading of other limbs. These asymmetries if unresolved can remain even after the pain in the foot has disappeared. The Veterinary Physiotherapist is trained to recognise small changes in gait and using information gained from the history of the animal along with findings from a hands on assessment can release restricted areas of soft tissue, provide alternative pain relief, and advise on exercises either to build muscle or enhance co-ordination or proprioception.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - About me…</image:title>
<image:caption>A love for exploring the countryside either on horseback or running with my dog and a desire to keep them happy and comfortable led to my interest in Veterinary Physiotherapy. I have owned animals all my life and enjoyed western riding, horse logging and competitive Endurance riding. However I was concerned by the many factors which could negatively impact the movement of a horse.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>Over 20 years ago I was fortunate to use the Pliance system to measure the forces under saddles and utilised this information along with the knowledge from my Mechanical Engineering degree to develop and make a flexible panel saddle. The effect of shoeing and hoof balance on the quality of movement and soundness of a horse was also of interest and has led to my own horses (an Arab, a rescue cob and a mule) being barefoot. I attended the two day Pete Ramey course and am impressed by what horses can achieve barefoot given the correct diet, conditioning and trimming, however I do understand this does not suit all owners and horses. The desire to acquire more knowledge on the optimisation of the musculoskeletal system in addition to wanting to pursue a new career which could benefit a wide range of animals, led to my application and completion of the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy degree from the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science. I have learnt how Veterinary Physiotherapy can help many conditions, including injuries, osteoarthritis, and rehabilitation from surgery in addition to optimising the performance of competition animals</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>The greatest benefit from physiotherapy is obtained when an animal is relaxed, so I travel to your pet so they are in familiar surroundings. Each animal is assessed as an individual. I use information obtained from their history together with findings from a gait and palpation assessment to decide on the most appropriate treatment. My aim is to work as part of the team responsible for your animal’s care which includes most importantly, you the owner and other professionals (for example, your vet, farrier and saddle fitter) to maximise the mobility and athleticism of your pet, whether they are a fit competition animal or are compromised by illness, injury or the effects of age. I recognise that the carer of the animal knows them best and because they spend most time with them can make a big difference in how they progress. I welcome updates between visits and particularly like seeing videos to keep me up to date. It is not only dogs and horses that I treat but also have experience with other animals.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sessions usually last for about 1 hour but initial assessments may take up to 2 hours. I travel to your pet so that they are in familiar surroundings and at their most relaxed. When you contact me I will ask some questions about you and your pet which will include your vets details so that I can obtain the necessary veterinary consent. If you would rather do this yourself please use the form below and bring it to your first appointment. Usually your vet does not require to see your pet, but there may be occasions when they do request to see them before giving consent for physiotherapy. My assessment will start by taking a detailed history followed by a gait assessment. I use this information together with my findings from a hands on assessment to formulate a treatment plan. I am quiet and patient whilst working so the animal is as relaxed as possible. If your pet is very nervous it may limit the amount I can achieve on the first session, however I believe it is best to give them a positive experience and usually after the first session they relax and enjoy subsequent sessions. The treatment will be a combination of manual therapy, electrotherapy and exercises to target specific muscles. I will email you a report of my significant findings and details of exercises which will help improve your pet’s musculature or movement. All exercise plans and advice are unique for each animal and owner. I may send a copy of my report to your vet if they have requested one and will contact them if I have found anything I think they should be aware of. I send you the before and after physiotherapy videos I have taken. I welcome updates between visits and will be happy to discuss progress. I especially like seeing videos of how you are progressing.</image:caption>
